Anthro Day 2019: Ask Us Anything!

We at The Dirt are excited to be a part of the American Anthropological Association’s Anthro Day activities, and while there are tons of other participants all over the world, we hopped on to Skype for our first-ever AMA session, where we answered some questions submitted by you, the listener!

The full video is available on YouTube, and we answered the following questions from:

Desi Saxophonist: Is anthropology considered a "scientific" discipline? By whom, and how?

Madelynn: What is the deal with the boats found by the pyramids? The whole deal, date, construction, wood, purpose, popular mythos, etc.

Tim and Teresa: Why do archaeologists use a square grid?

Tim and Teresa: What do you like better, the field or the lab?

Tim and Teresa: What's the coolest thing you've found?

Tim and Teresa: How many artifacts do you usually find?

Tim and Teresa: What was your favorite place to dig?

Naomi: Are there any archaeological remains in Antarctica?

Ella:  When did humans start placing significance on their hair? The way it looked and was styled/decorated. Why and how did this come about? Any interesting facts would be cool too.

Kris: Big scale question for you! Anthropologists and archaeologists often study things that are very old or very remote so what makes these disciplines relevant and useful to people today? Why do we need them?

Kathleen: Would Neanderthals be good at yoga?

Crista: What is the longest active excavation?

Gabrielle: How do you think anthropology can improve its public outreach?

Basil: How long will a man lie i' the earth ere he rot? (Hamlet, Act V Scene I)
